The Garfield Free Public Library is seeking a dynamic, community-focused individual who is technologically savvy and works well in a team environment to fill the position of Adult Services Librarian. The position requires a knowledge of library and technology trends, with excellent skills in reference, reader’s advisory, technology instruction, collection management, flexibility to embrace new projects and assignments.
Under the supervision from the Director, the Adult Services Librarian will provide excellent customer service to the public, excellent reference service and provide overall technical support for our team and public.
Responsibilities:
Collection development management, purchasing, cataloging and weeding.
Creation, execution, and maintaining a variety of programs for in-person, online and outreach.
Instruct patrons on how to locate information from a wide variety of materials including physical books, online resources and databases.
Covering service desk, including answering reference questions and reader’s advisory questions and flexibility to assist any public service desk or department including copier, printing and scanning.
Training and developing resources and classes for our team, the Board and public on the use of digital library resources.
Proficient in software such as Canva to create promotional materials as well as working knowledge of Microsoft Office or Google Docs.
Updating the BCCLS calendar and our Webpage of Adult Programs.
Create displays showcasing the library and its collection holdings.
21 hours of continuing education courses are required every year via webinars, workshops, or seminars.
Performing other duties as assigned for an evolving and growing library.
Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program.
NJ Professional Librarian’s certificate issued by Thomas Edison University
Demonstrated experience in the following areas: customer service, reference and technology assistance. Adult programming, collection development.
Strong interest in new library trends.
Strong computer and social media skills.
Effective communications skills and ability to work harmoniously with the public and co-workers.
Ability to recognize and set priorities and to use initiative and independent judgment in a variety of situations.
Be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, patrons, user groups, community organizations and volunteer groups.
BCCLS and Polaris LEAP experience preferred but not required.
Schedule:
The schedule for this position is 35 hours per week, including an evening shift and Saturday on a rotating basis.
